The most popular application for essential oils is in aromatherapy, where they are breathed via a variety of techniques. Essential oils should not be ingested. The molecules in essential oils can have a variety of effects on your body. Some plant compounds that are applied to the skin are absorbed. Aromatherapy is a type of complementary medicine in which aromatic molecules are believed to have therapeutic benefits. The use of aromatherapy to promote relaxation may be beneficial, however, there is insufficient proof that essential oils may successfully treat any condition. Essential oils may have been present in the resins of aromatics and plant extracts used to make traditional remedies and scented preparations like perfumes and incense in ancient Egypt, including frankincense, myrrh, cedarwood, juniper berry, and cinnamon. Essential is not suitable for direct application to the skin but is highly recommended to be mixed with a carrier oil, and/or diluted in water.
